Evensong is at 5pm today.
From next Sunday as we enter Lent we will not sing the Gloria, Allelulia’s will be absent and we will not offer the Sign of Peace as part of our penitential journey to Calvary.
As part of your Lenten discipline you may wish to take on something rather than just give-up something. Why not make that extra effort to attend a weekday mass or join in a study group or come to Stations of the Cross?
Sunday 3rd February
This week we remember in our prayers: those who care for people at home; for seven parishes of the Bermondsey Deanery; for our brothers and sisters at St Agatha’s RC Church; for a prayerful Lent.

Ash Wednesday
Ash Wednesday has been traditionally observed by the Imposition of Ashes where, at the Mass of the day, the sign of the Cross, with the blessed ashes (made of the palm branches of the previous year), is made on the recipient’s forehead as a sign of penitence. One formula that is often used is:
Remember that you are dust and to dust you shall return”.
Ashes remind us of our own mortality and judgement; and, our need for repentance as individuals and as a community.
Ash Wednesday is a special day of obligation and every effort should be made to attend Mass. There will be three Masses celebrated here at St Luke’s – 9am, Noon and 8pm.
As a family read Joel 2:1-2, 12-17 then spend some time talking about the meaning of the reading. Then, together, silently think about ways you have failed God. On a piece of paper, write a list of the things you have done that you should ask God to forgive. Do not talk about it; but simply fold up the paper and having made a small fire in a BBQ or bowl, place your papers in the fire and make sure they all burn completely.
