ASH WEDNESDAY

Fr Martin writes

Tomorrow we enter into “Ordinary Time” in the Church Year. This seasonal description, I have to admit, I find quite banal – how can any Sunday be Ordinary? And what is Ordinary about the many wonders of God’s creation? When we think about the great love God demonstrates for us by the gift of His only Son to be our Lord and Saviour the only description that can be made is Extra-Ordinary.

Be that as it may Ordinary Time is what the liturgical powers have decreed and so we return to Green as our colour of the day.

Today being the Baptism of the Lord it is only fitting that we are using for our Penetential Rite the “Asperges” or Sprinkling with Blessed Water. As the bidding prayers reminds us we are to call to mind our own baptism and those baptismal promises we may have made as parents and godparents. From next Sunday and throughout Ordinary Time we will be using the General Confession at the start of the Mass and return to Asperges at Easter.

Please hold Fr Grant Holmes, the Chaplain at Kingston Hospital, in your prayers. Fr Grant has himself recently been hospitalised with heart problems and will need to take thing very carefully for the immediate future. The priestly presence in our hospitals is a vital witness and ministry. Together with other local clergy I will be taking on 24 hour on call responsibilities on various days to help Fr Grant and the Chaplaincy Team.

Sound system

The contractor is returning to fine tune the sound system on Tuesday. If you have comments to make on the level of amplification etc please do speak with Fr Martin or the churchwardens.
The feedback to date has been positive and appreciative of the system.  Contributions to the cost of the system are still most welcome.

 Baptisms

Three baptisms are already booked for February. Please pray for each of the children and for their parents and godparents:
Rosie Clover  (2nd February)  Phoebe Bloom (9th February) and  Joseph Kemsley (17th February
